Ipomoea pes-caprae, also known as the Beach Morning Glory or Goat’s Foot Creeper, is a fast-growing, perennial groundcover native to tropical and subtropical coastal regions. Recognized by its trailing stems, rounded “goat’s foot” leaves, and trumpet-shaped purple-pink flowers, it is a hardy plant often seen stabilizing sandy shorelines and dunes. Apart from its ecological role, it is valued in traditional medicine and as an ornamental creeper for coastal landscapes.
1. Coastal Erosion Control
Its long, creeping stems spread rapidly, binding sand and preventing beach erosion naturally.
2. Salt & Drought Tolerance
Highly resilient, it thrives in saline, sandy soils with minimal water, making it perfect for coastal gardens.
3. Ornamental Beauty
With its lush foliage and vibrant purple-pink morning glory flowers, it adds tropical charm to landscapes.
4. Medicinal Uses
Traditionally used in folk medicine to treat inflammation, wounds, and skin irritations. Extracts are also studied for anti-inflammatory properties.
5. Wildlife Support
Its flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, while the dense cover provides shelter for small coastal fauna.
Aggressive Spreading → Can grow invasively, but makes it excellent for groundcover and soil stabilization.
Limited Inland Use → Best suited to coastal conditions, though it can adapt to sandy inland gardens.
Short-Lived Blooms → Flowers open in the morning and fade by evening, but bloom continuously in warm climates.
Not Frost-Tolerant → Sensitive to cold, but thrives in tropical and subtropical zones.
